In order to realize the development of a sustainable and prosperous society, it is essential to create an enriched, environment-compatible society amidst global-scale environmental and resource-related restrictions. The Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 increased, in particular, the importance of energy, which supports the maintenance of our high quality of life. The blue light-emitting diode, the invention for which Prof. Akasaki and Prof. Amano of Nagoya University received Nobel Prize, is a device used in energy-saving light technology. This example shows us the importance of developing materials to support the creation of a sustainable and prosperous society.
The Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, IMaSS, was launched as a research institute at Nagoya University in October 2015. The institute has been designated as a Joint Usage/Research Center by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Through joint usage and research related to energy management technologies, it serves as a venue for everything from fundamental research through to system-building for actual deployment in society. It is the largest research institute in Nagoya University, comprising the Center for Integrated Research of Future Electronics, the Advanced Measurement Technology Center, the Division of Materials Research, the Division of Systems Research, Funded Research Divisions, and the Industry-Academia Collaborative Chair. To contribute the realization of a sustainable society, the institute is conducting studies on innovative energy-saving technologies, advanced measurement technologies, material and device developments, and system technologies for realizing study results in society.
IMaSS will organize the International Conference on Materials and Systems for Sustainability 2017 (ICMaSS2017) for three days from September 29 to October 1, 2017. The conference will be held at Nagoya University. This conference has formerly been held as the International Symposium on EcoTopia Sciences every two years since 2005, at which materials, energy, the environment and social systems have been topics for the development of a sustainable society. We would like to further strengthen our focus on material science at the new conference, ICMaSS, pursuing the same research directions as before. We would like to invite all of you to share and exchange the newest progress of the research area. In particular, the active participation of young researchers is essential for a long-term solution to create a society in harmony with our global environment. We therefore hope that this conference will contribute to the development of human resources among the younger generation.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Research fields ranging from materials to system technologies will be of interest in the conference. Scientists and engineers from any discipline, who are engaged in research, development and technology areas related to such research fields, are invited to contribute papers. All submitted papers will be presented for the publication and presentation in oral or poster sessions. Younger scientists and students are particularly welcome to ICMaSS2017. Best presentation prizes will be awarded to outstanding authors of poster sessions.
Those who intend to contribute papers are requested to submit an abstract of not more than 200 words through the web. After acceptance of the abstract, the authors should submit the extended abstract. The length of the extended abstract should fit on one A4 page including all references, tables and figures.
